APRIL 2012 - 2012 review of published reference tools now open

The GSCP is calling upon experts from buying companies, initiatives, trade unions, NGOs, auditing and training bodies to review and comment on the GSCP Reference tools. These Reference tools aim to describe best existing practice and provide a common interpretation of fair labour and environmental requirements and their implementation in global supply chains. The requirements outlined in the Reference tools are agreed upon by consensus among a wide array of stakeholders involved in the drafting. Following their publication, they are regularly reviewed in order to ensure they constantly reflect the latest best existing practices.

We would like to invite you and/or your colleagues to participate in this review process to comment on, amend and strengthen the Reference tools. The consultation for all our Reference tools is now open from 30th March until 31st May 2012.

Go to this page to find out more about the review process and download the Reference tools.

Thank you for contributing to this collaborative effort. We look forward to receiving your feedback, and please also feel free to share this information with others. Any questions please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

june 2011 - launch of the gscp equivalence process: june 21 - watch this space!

The GSCP and the EP Expert Working Group are very happy to announce the impending launch of the Equivalence Process (EP), after two years in the making:

the Equivalence Process platform will go live on Tuesday June 21st 2011

The GSCP has developed the EP as a means to deliver upon its objectives of harmonising existing efforts and delivering a common, consistent and global approach for the continuous improvement of working and environmental conditions in global supply chains.

The EP integrates all existing GSCP reference tools. These tools provide a common interpretation, based on best existing practice, of fair labour and environmental requirements and their implementation in supply chains [more information here]. The aim behind the creation and use of these tools is to foster convergence in approaches, accelerate remediation and create the level playing field necessary for collaboration on capacity building.

Through the unique benchmarking system that is the GSCP Equivalence Process, these reference tools can be used by companies / initiatives as a reference against which to compare, or otherwise review, their existing tools. This process also enables comparability between systems, allowing one-to-one sharing of results between users as a basis for future collaboration. The EP platform will be available for use from June 21st 2011.

In the meantime we invite you to find out more on the EP: how it works, who can use it, how and for what purposes.

Go to the EP page for more information

MAY 2011 - gscp members' meeting outcomes

The GSCP members' meeting took place in Brussels on April 14th. We were very happy to see 80% of our membership represented there, by one or more experts for each company - this was particularly crucial to achieve because of the amount and quality of input we requested from attendees that day. And we were not disappointed by the result!

The members' meeting was articulated around 3 main topics: (1) GSCP strategy, (2) the GSCP Equivalence Process and (3) GSCP global reach and outreach. These sessions included roundtable discussion, designed primarily to gather members’ feedback and input on the structure and content of the Programme's strategy going forward. Here is a condensed view of what GSCP members heard and discussed that day:

Session 1: GSCP strategy – achieving the shift from framework building (the reference tools and Equivalence Process – enabling convergence in requirements and comparability of systems) to collaborative work on remediation and capacity building. Part of this strategy revolves around addressing, in the GSCP framework, significant endemic issues requiring cross‐industry guidelines, through multi-participant Centralised Expert Working Groups. Attendees discussed this strategy and provided input on selected remediation and capacity building topics identified for potential focus.

Session 2: the GSCP Equivalence Process (EP) – the EP Expert Working Group and GSCP team presented the result of their 2 years work on the EP, with the IT platform hosting the process in its final stages of development. Attendees heard how Expert Working Group companies are going to make use of the EP, and understood how a widespread use of this tool will allow objective assessment and facilitate overall upgrade of internal compliance systems, improving quality and reducing duplication in auditing and contribute to setting the stage for sustainable remediation and capacity building in their supply chains. More on the launch soon!

Session 3: GSCP global reach and outreach – ensuring the Programme’s geographical focus is in line with member companies’ needs and interests, and that relevant key stakeholders are involved to support the objectives of the GSCP in remediation and capacity building on the ground.  This included discussion on the establishment and structure of Regional Clusters as regional / local implementation platforms for capacity building projects and guidelines as developed by the Centralised Expert Working Groups.

The discussions and work accomplished will serve as a basis for the strategy and work of the GSCP going forward. Watch this space! Many thanks to our members for their contribution, their energy and enthusiasm.

november 2010 - the gscp advisory board releases a note on gscp priorities and activities

Three years have now passed since the GSCP was established and it is believed a solid basis has been created for the roll-out on a large scale of concrete actions and measures in the global supply chains. The GSCP Advisory Board therefore sees it timely to express its opinion about the present priorities in the work of the GSCP, as well as some of the issues that are now being discussed and prepared.
This note builds on the previous one (click here to access the note released in May 2009), which describes the approach of this Board to its engagement and work within the GSCP. As the views expressed in the previous note are still valid, this document should be read as an addition to it and will not repeat all the issues. You can download the full text here.

november 2010 - gscp reference tools on ENVIRONMENTAL audit process and methodology PUBLISHED

The GSCP environmental tools mirror the structure of the reference tools on social practice. Having published the GSCP Environmental Reference Requirements and the GSCP Environmental Implementation Guidelines last month, it’s with pleasure and renewed thanks to the Expert Working Group that we now share the GSCP reference tools on Environmental Audit Process & Methodology with you.

These reference tools gather best practice for each step of the environmental audit process and will foster consistency in the way these audits are prepared, led and followed up. This set of tools includes a reference Environmental Audit Process complemented by 7 other tools – these provide further guidelines and templates for carrying out a best practice environmental audit. For further details please see the Environmental tools page of this website.

OCTOber 2010 - gscp ENVIRONMENTAL reference REQUIREMENTS AND GSCP ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLEMENTATION GUIDELINES PUBLISHED

The GSCP and the Environmental Module Expert Working Group are happy to announce the publication of the Environmental Reference Requirements and of the Environmental Implementation Guidelines for suppliers! You can access both tools and further details on the Environmental Tools page of this website.

The Reference Requirements were developed as a best practices tool for production sites across the whole supply chain. The requirements reflect a common understanding of good environmental practice and are applicable to all raw material processing, agricultural, manufacturing  and logistics sites in the supply chain.

The Implementation Guidelines complement the reference requirements by giving guidance to sites as to how to reach the required level.

We encourage you to use the reference tool and the guidelines and to share them with your counterparts in other organisations – if the value of these documents has already been demonstrated by their uptake at draft stage by several global companies and schemes, it is essential to maximise their reach in order to drive convergence in environmental compliance requirements and success in their implementation.
